This week we were provided with our course outline for AS media, we were told a rough structure to the academic year, as to how our lessons would be divided into two separate sections, with two separate teachers. We also handed in our summer learning task (see below), which was completed over the holidays as preparation for the course. Additionally we also filmed a short film only consisting of 5 shots. This task was our first chance as a class to use the equipment available to us.
Week 2
This week we learnt the very basics of the editing software Adobe Premier Pro – we began editing the short film we created in the previous week. In addition to this we discovered how producers target their audience, we learnt audience classifications such as: A, B, C1, C2, D and E. We analysed separate pieces of media based around these classifications, for example we analysed Nuts, 50 Cent’s Get rich or Die Tryin’ film poster and a woman’s magazine. Also this week we learnt the narrative theories of Propp and Todorov. In addition to this we also learnt different type of camera shots:
Week 3
This week we began the coursework of the AS Media Studies qualification. We were given the brief and given the success criteria as well as advice on how to do well on the preliminary task. Next lesson we began filming our preliminary task, I filmed this task with Harry and Sam as the actors. We also began to edit our preliminary task in Premier Pro. Next we were given an introduction to the editing software Adobe Photoshop, in this we learned the basics of removing parts of the image and changing the accordingly.
Week 4
This week we continued editing our preliminary task on Premier Pro, this took up the majority of the time as I accidentally deleted files which were required for the film to be played, due to this I had to start editing from the original footage again. However we were also given another premier pro workshop session once the preliminary task was complete.
Week 5
This week we were
given the second stage of our coursework. We were given the success criteria
for the research section of our course. This was beneficial to me as it made me
alert of how we can achieve high on this section and what to look at from an examiners
point of view. We began our analysis of our first film in the second lesson, I
analysed the opening of the Dark Knight. Next we were given a workshop in
lighting, this was extremely helpful as I was not aware of the complexity and
necessity of lighting in film. Lighting Workshop The first thing as a
class we have learnt is how lighting affects film. We learnt this as a lighting
workshop. The first thing we learnt is the different kind of lights we have
available to use. The lights we have access to and how to use them. The
equipment we can use are two LED panels. This will be an advantage as enable
the shots to look higher quality than using a standard house light.
Week 6
This week we continued editing our preliminary task on Premier Pro, this took up the majority of the time as I accidently deleted files which were required for the film to be played, due to this I had to start editing from the original footage again. However we were also given another premier pro workshop session once the preliminary task was complete. This week I also learnt the basics of the editing software Adobe Premier Pro – I learnt how to import clips, line the clip up on the time line and cut them to the right size.
Week 7
This week we continued with our first analysis. I continued with my Dark Knight analysis, in the next lesson I completed my first analysis, we were recommended to complete 3 analyses so I moved onto my second analysis. I began to examine YouTube clips of opening sequences to thriller and action films, and I came across the opening to Mission Impossible, therefore for the rest of the week I analysed this.
Week 8
This week I completed the research stage of AS Media. For my final analysis I analysed the opening of The Bourne Identity. The examiners look for inventive ways of illustrating research, due to this I made my analysis a video analysis (http://tomasmannmcleod.blogspot.co.uk/p/research-material.html) in addition to this I also added the rest of my analysis’ to this blog page.
Week 9
This week I began to catch up on the work I had missed through illness, I found this a struggle because a weeks’ worth of content is hard to catch up on, but in order to do so I created a survey using survey monkey (http://surveymonkey.com/s/W6823M7) in order to research what my target audience would like to see in the film. Once I had received enough responses I began to analyse the responses to illustrate how I could use their answers to improve my opening.
Week 10
I continued with my survey analysis this week and began going into a large amount of detail with regards to individual responses from my survey analysis based around the target audience. This took longer than expected however found it enjoyable as I could see how others thought what makes a good film, however analysing the results was reasonably difficult as I felt I often ran out of things to compare and see how I can use the survey to improve my final task.
Week 11
This week I finally finished my survey analysis. So I moved on to the second research stave, Vox Pops. I used these to see what specifically my target audience would like to see in a film. This was a long and tiresome process as finding people that are free and of my target audience was difficult. I finished the Vox Pops this week. The editing process was pleasurable as it didn’t take a long time and I learnt new skills in Adobe Premier Pro. I learnt how to add titles.
Week 12
I began to start on summarising my initial ideas this week. Choosing between ideas was a difficult process as I could picture both openings in my head and how they should look. However despite this I finally decided on my final idea, a business man in a hotel room that finds some distressing news and how he reacts to it. Along with deciding this is I began and finished writing the script for the opening. This took what seemed like a lifetime and required many out of school hours to complete. After this I did outside research into the psychology ofcolour to help me decide of costume:
Week 13
I began finalising my planning for my final task. I finalised my script and had it read over by a few people, the views on the script were all positive, however some located little errors such as grammar. Also I began my story boards, this is proving to be a lengthy task due to the amount of shots required to make the final project. Over the winter break we were given the task to finish all of the planning and be prepared to film when we get back.
Week 14
This week I shot my film, this proved a long and tiresome ordeal, and it took 5 hours to film a 2 minute opening sequence. The next lesson I imported the clips from the camera and went through each of the 103 clips and deleted ones which weren’t needed. From there I opened a new Premier Pro project and imported the clips I wished to use in my final edit. I then lined up all the clips in order and cut them down to size.
Week 15
This week I continued editing my final opening sequence of ‘The Fraud of Mr Rogers’. I learnt on Adobe Premier Pro how to use video transitions in order to create the change from clip to clip smoother.
Week 16
This week I added sound effects to the final cut. In order for these sound effects to work I learnt that I needed to learn how to edit sound. In addition to this I learnt how to change the lighting on a clip, this was necessary for me as I needed to change the brightness of the shots as some of them were shot in a different light to others. In addition to this I also learnt how to speed up clips and slow them down. It turns out in can be edited in the same way that video clips can. I also learnt how to use Adobe After effects in order to convey the emotions of Mr Rogers when he receives the phone call.
Week 17
This I continued to work on the final edit of ‘The fraud of
Mr Rogers’. I needed to add titles to my final edit of my opening sequence. This
week I set myself the aim of completing the production titles of the opening,
the film title and adding effects onto the surreal phone call shot.
